- Abstract: The “monopoly” (G. Giorni) that a codified Petrarchism exerted over sixteenth-century Italian poetry incited forms of resistance which expressed themselves most fully – paradoxically – in the manuals of rhyme which were meant to vulgarise this very norm but were instead transformed by their creators into sites of linguistic and rhetorical debate and spaces in which to elaborate an alternative canon. The analysis of these a priori practical works shows them to be fundamentally shaped by the dominant poetic concerns of the day.
