- Abstract: The sixteenth-century Spanish poetic landscape witnessed the progressive multiplication of epithets thanks to the two-fold influence of classically-inspired rhetoric (e.g. Erasmus’ De Copia) and the catalogues of epithets derived from Ravisius Textor. Situated between these two extremes of theoretical work and practical manual, the compositions of poets, notably by Garcilaso de la Vega, testify to this development, as is highlighted by commentaries (Brocense, Herrera), sometimes inspired by Scaliger.
