  • Abstract: The episode of the construction of Stonehenge questions the inclusion of the marvellous in accounts of a historical nature. Paradoxically, the authority of the prophet Merlin reinforces the credibility of an etiological account concerning this monument endowed with a simultaneously memorial and funerary function. Stonehenge constitutes by its very existence an extraordinary sign which is capable of inciting supernatural explanations, yet different strategies enable this element to be toned down.
