- Abstract: In the twelfth century, the monasteries of central Italy had to fit into a world which had changed radically given the presence of the Normans, the challenges of imperial power, and the success of the Gregorian programme. The reorganisation of archives, the compilation of cartularies, and the writing of chronicles were means through which they found their place in the renewed political and social organisation of central Italy.
