• Abstract: In the first Roman chronicles, the truth proved by documents or books was a sort of obsession. Chroniclers insisted on the deontological question of the difficult selection of credible sources. In addition to the metaphor of the tower of Babel was another very suggestive one: that of the labyrinth of books and sources. These two metaphors illustrate the anguish provoked by the growing awareness of the relativity and subjectivity of history.
