  • Abstract: Man for man is either God or wolf (Montaigne), or God and wolf (Hobbes). It is instructive to compare these two sayings. In ways that surpass that of Erasmus, they both associate God and wolf. For Montaigne, men are both God and wolf inside a covenant: marriage. For Hobbes, politics makes all the difference: the covenants creating cities and the covenants between citizens define relations of friendship and hostility, depending on whether or not they are present and respected.
