Abstract: If Hobbes maintained the integrity of man by removing all possibility of individual action – a kind of disenfranchisement of his sociability that nevertheless left his political essence intact –, Montaigne and La Boétie proposed a similar conception of « obedience to public reason » and voluntary servitude which considerably limited the very notion of liberty.
