Abstract: From 1629, and still today, the word argot is explained in dictionaries through a series of definitions which have been repeated over and over again without re-examination. These definitions often contradict each other, and moreover, are often contradicted by fact. The author of this work retraces the steps and suggests certain avenues by which the polysemy of the term can be studied anew.
