Abstract: The book examines the knowledge of artisans and architect-builders, describing how they wrote about and designed their techniques. It shows that the latter were innovators, participating in the movement of the aestheticization of technique and helping to redefine architecture at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century.
