• Abstract: In 1531 Rabelais published Hippocrates’s On the Nature of Man in a Latin translation drawn from humanist Andrea Brenti’s Hippocratis ac Galeni libri aliquot. This article examines the thirty-nine printed notes that the humanist doctor inserted in the margins of his translation, proposes a typology for this annotation, and seeks to identify Rabelais’s sources and working tools and to raise the question of the authenticity of the treatise, to which the humanist dedicated five of his thirty-nine marginalia.
