Abstract: The essay flourished independently of the reign of fiction and literary absolutism, preserving the utopian stance which was at its root. The construction of a theory of the essay led to the development of essayist thinking that was anti-genre or non-genre and called upon an esthetic model of conditional literarity. The outcome of this meta-poetic study is to clarify the essay’s ideology.
