Abstract: The circle of poetae minors, by developing the hypothesis that the presence of Gautier, Bertrand, and Baudelaire in Des Esseintes’s pantheon outlines a possible genealogy for the Croquis parisiens, further confirms the way in which Huysmans’s ambiguous naturalism took root in the Romantic, and more precisely, grotesque, aesthetic.
