Abstract: The first volume of the complete narrative works of the Goncourts comprises a novel, En 18.., a work which is paradoxical, erudite, playful, and disenchanted: the true aesthetic manifesto of fantasy, and also a novella, Les Actrices, which illustrates the ambivalent relationship the two brothers had with the world of theatre.
