Abstract: For Stendhal and Balzac, the matière d'Italie, like the matière de Bretagne in the Middle Ages, borders on fiction. This is the case with Russian subject matter too, which features as a symbol of individual and collective tragedy in both Stendhal's work and the Comédie humaine.
