Abstract: Obsessive repetition is the target of laughter in Feydeau’s theatre: characters rendered robotic by convention, fits of hysteria and fantasies churn out the same ineffectual language. Feydeau exploits these techniques to question the scientific, social, intellectual, and linguistic structures of the Belle Époque.
