- Abstract: The history of dance in the West is often approached through a consideration of how morality has condemned it. One can also note that dance generates norms, constraints, and even a moral purpose. This article suggests putting historiographical tools to use that allow us to study dance as a moral problem: how do moral discourses understand the ways that people dance? How do dancing practices function as technologies of the self? What is the role of the historian in the face of this question?
