• Abstract: Is it acceptable to dance in times of war? In response to this question, the Vichy regime–and, later, the Provisional Government–both responded by banning balls. This action was met with opposition from young people who were not willing to give up one of their favorite pastimes, dancing. So, secret balls proliferated in the woods, fields, and in uninhabited structures, as documented by hundreds of reports, particularly in the department of Côtes-du-Nord.
