Abstract: The double romantic suicide or shinjū is both a socio-historical phenomenon and a Japanese literary topos which reached its peak at the turn of the 18^th century. It consists in two lovers simultaneously consenting to death, such as Tobukei and Ohatsu in Sonezaki shinjū, a play created in 1703 by Chikamatsu Monzaemon for the bunraku (puppet theatre). This study is dedicated to the theme of the shinjū and its very specific depiction in the bunraku.
