- Abstract: Talma did not play Hamlet—which would become one of his most requested roles—until April 1803, more than 30 years after the play’s premiere. From this date, until that of the publication of Ducis’s Œuvres complètes in 1813, the text of Hamlet is in a semi-permanent state of revision. This article looks at the Ducis-Talma correspondence not only to trace the history of the Hamlet text, but also to pin down the nature of the collaboration between “the poet” and “his muse”.
