• Abstract: This study looks at the “serpentine dance”, the first dance performed by Loïe Fuller at the Folies-Bergère in November 1892. We assess and question from a technical, pragmatic and symbolic viewpoint the apparatus used by Fuller in the “serpentine” to understand the way in which the dancer was anchored in the socio-cultural field of the late nineteenth century.
