. Consuming Female Performers (1850s-1950s)

Abstract: In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the body of the actress became prominent. Female performers displayed themselves on stage all around Europe. Yet, this body as entertainment also gave rise to a body of texts. We look at some “novels on actresses”, written in French, English or German, to see how the body of the actress is dealt with.
