• Abstract: Mallarmé was one of the main sources of the literary, artistic and cultural renewal which propelled Spain into the twentieth century. Beginning with the homage to the poet in the Botanical garden of Madrid in 1923, this article discusses how Mallarmé’s poetic texts and his use of metaphor were crucial for Spanish literature and for the philosophy of one of the principal promoters of Spanish modernity, José Ortega y Gasset.
