  • Abstract: Mallarmé’s poetry is the result of a major reflection on verse, turned towards the past in order to establish a new future. With his sensitivity to rhythmic metrics, Mallarmé could connect to prosodic writing, as illustrated by L’Après-midi d’un faune. The deepening of the potential musicality of verse is only fully realised in a syncretism which links rhythmic innovation and plastic equilibrium with the ancient alexandrine.
