- Abstract: Is civil religion an adventitious construction, which contradicts its principles? I aim to show that the question arises from the tension between the demand of autonomy, as the foundation of the political right, and the feeling of belonging, as the foundation of the social bond. Rousseau thinks that he has resolved this tension in his Social Contract. It can nevertheless be considered that the contradiction is less resolved than it is displaced.
