- Abstract: Drawing on Bergson’s lectures of 1891-1893, this article interprets the genesis of the social theory proposed in the Two Sources as a reply not only to Durkheim's doctrine but also to the post-Spencerian debate about the relation between biology and society. Bergson's vitalist position is not reducible to a strict biologism, nor is it understandable through the traditional opposition between nature and reason.
