• Abstract: Since democracy is incomplete, doubt has a useful role to play both in carrying out the investigations about public questions and nourishing criticism of established institutions; human individuality – its protection and its development – is nevertheless, according notably to Dewey, a non-negotiable « principle » which cannot be subjected to sceptical relativism. The confrontation of these two « beliefs » is illuminating as regards the « crisis » currently affecting the model of liberal democracy.
