- Abstract: In the Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, autobiography is accompanied by an opinionism which derives from the essay. Subjective and heterodox, satirical and comedic, Sterne’s essay-writing was to inspire a long line of texts in the nineteenth century whose titles claimed affiliation to the original. The article explores this literary vein, studying the way in which it transformed the Sterne-style essay.
