- Abstract: Joseph Joubert (1754-1824) inaugurated a rather strange tradition of writers without writings. External factors cannot explain the unfinished essays left behind in his notebooks ; rather, they are testament to what was, for Joubert, the impossibility of giving form to his thoughts, and perhaps to thought itself.
