- Abstract: This study proposes a re-reading of the autobiographical account Au cœur du harem (1911), a novel, and two fictional memoirs by Jehan d’Ivray, a French woman who lived in Egypt for forty years, from 1878 to 1919. The article analyses the questions surrounding slavery in Egyptian harems which were debated by the public as well as by historians. The author’s works problematise dynamics of domination, uncovering the remnants of slavery and resistance to abolition.
