- Abstract: This work by Yvonne Schultz tells the story of a couple of Tonkinese peasants forced to work on the rubber tree plantations in Cochinchina. The article analyses the fictionalisation of coolie slavery through different narrative sequences: the crossing on the jaunier boat, the arrival at the port of Saigon and the couple’s separation, and the two characters’ paths as they are submitted to different treatments (difficult working conditions, the cruelty and corruption of the caïs – rapes, prostitution).
