• Abstract: During the Enlightenment, children were often abandoned with objects intended to protect or identify them. At times they also had a note indicating their name, the reasons for which they were being left, etc. Archival research makes it possible to show the variety and functions of these « remarques » and « excuses », as they are known in French, and which are reminiscent of certain aspects of contemporary fiction.
