- Abstract: This chapter argues that the abandonment of children in Angel Day’s Daphnis and Chloe (1587) presents an opportunity to examine the porous boundaries that were often believed to divide humans from animals in the early modern period. By focusing in part on non-human beings, Daphnis and Chloe explores what it meant to be human and what it meant to define the human family ; the divisions between animal and human are blurred enough that animal behaviour becomes strangely familiar and even instructive.
