Abstract: After the inaugural “negro cry” of Cahier d’un retour au pays natal, the Anthologie de la nouvelle poésie nègre et malgache de langue française by Senghor, with a preface by Sartre entitled “Orphée noir”, established Negritude as a poetic movement to which Sartre’s notoriety and aura imparted a philosophical and global political resonance comparable to existentialism.
