Abstract: In Minnelli’s adaptation, the transformation of the original meaning of the story and a new interpretation of Emma’s behavior shed light on the commercial success of the film and its cinematic quality. These result from a cinematic translation, in the sociological sense, of the personal experience the spectator has of the relationship between the sexes. Including a historical context in which women are questioning their traditional roles, the film continues to satisfy our sense of ordinary justice.
