Abstract: What makes this French television adaptation particularly distinctive is the importance of the narrative voice of André Dussolier, which punctuates scenes and comments on the action, and seems to give Dickens’ text room to exert control. A comparison of staging and shot choices with what has generally been preferred in Great Britain in recent adaptations genuinely allows us to distinguish this work from others in a very significant way.
