  • Abstract: The beginning of the colonisation of North America is often seen as the result of an essentially commercial logic. Turning this interpretation upside down, and using the Company of Virginia as an example, we aim to demonstrate that the agents of colonisation were also galvanised by the humanist political project of founding a new commonwealth. We find an echo of this in propaganda literature and major authors like F. Bacon and W. Shakespeare.
