Abstract: Despite the generic differences, a comparison between the Mémoires and the fictional Le Spleen by the Baron de Besenval reveals the influence of a moral philosophy which can be put down to a particular sensibility, a cultural climate, the ramblings of a century going to pieces, and a field of possibilities that fictional writing and memorial writing exploit in visibly different ways.
