  • Abstract: A unique object in the work of Paul Claudel, the Cent phrases pour éventails (1927–the first Japanese edition) effect a curious syncretism between Japanese and Western universes. Through a hundred phrases inspired by haikus, Claudel enters into a dialogue with calligraphy and theories of Oriental poetry. In this context, the fragment is renewed inspiration, it melts and reverts to that movement inherent in all artworks. How does this fragmentation re-motivate meaning?
