- Abstract: The appearance of canvases devoted to single objects (in the work of Manet, Courbet or Van Gogh) was a new phenomenon in painting. This asks art historians to explain why we had to wait until the end of the nineteenth century to see the possibility of cutting emerge, making, as Fernand Léger would go on to say, “the object happen”, until then the parergon of the subject painting or figuring amongst the vast ensembles constituting still lifes.
