• Abstract: This study focuses on the organic literary tradition which emerged from the “disparaged heritage of Cervantes” (dixit Milan Kundera), was deployed in Gustave Flaubert’s novels, and ended up in the art of Franz Kafka. Questioning the fragment illuminates the problematic of the totality in the history of the European novel.
