Abstract: In 1643, a work by the German doctor, Jean-Henri Meibom, was published in Leiden with the title, De l’utilité de la flagellation. It argues for the use of beatings to stimulate sexual activity. This study analyzes and puts into context this curious and complex approach, as well as the main revivals of this profoundly original text.
