Abstract: This selection of letters from 1721 to 1755 gives a wide-ranging view of the activities of this magistrate who became a literary and scientific figure. We see him maintaining long-lasting friendships and frequenting the most famous salons while at the same time concerning himself with the wellbeing of nations and the republic of letters.
