- Abstract: The eighteenth century saw the diffusion of conduct writing through a variety of genres including narrative fiction. This essay focuses on Pietro Chiari who was working in Venice at a time when it was a European centre for book production. After a discussion on how his non-fiction relates to conduct writing, the essay argues that his novels combine conduct writing with a changing understanding of subjectivity.
