- Abstract: Beginning with the short essay called “Vérités du temperament”, we demonstrate that Cioran’s writing stages a whole philosophy of lamentation. Lamenting amounts to the ultimate meaning and the reflection of pain. Whether it is exteriorized or interiorized, heartbreak can only take the form of lamentations with variable substance, authority and tonality. Only such a disconcerted being is allowed to speak, to tear himself up in the valley of tears of his writing.
