Abstract: his study analyzes the contributions that have brought to censorship, during the middle years of the century, the various proponents of criticism claiming itself “conservative” (Nisard), “defensive” (Cuvillier-Fleury), “reactionary” (Pontmartin). These critics and all their fellows are given the task of defending the contested foundations of society by the “unhealthy literature”. Without explicitly work towards censorship, they do not contribute less to its legitimation.
