Abstract: After the tumult of French Revolution, the aura of royalty was waning, its power exhausted and on the decline. The censor and the press perceived this evolution as an attack not just against the power in place but also against the moral structure of the state. Therefore the press functioned as an ally of the official censor, put in place to respect a particular notion of France, of its power, and to rally against the decadence that was occurring in the society.
