Abstract: Drawing on black silhouettes, this work analyzes allusions to the image or the representation of Blackness in the writings of Mérimée, for example the allusion to Dongola in L’Amour africain, and the mention of Ourika in La Double Méprise. In La Famille de Carvajal, some semantic overtones have been studied (for example, those arising from the names Flora and Dorothée). In the case of Tamango, it is Mérimée’s nuanced and original stance regarding the black “question” that still arouses interest.
