Abstract: In the debate on the union of the arts and industry, Mérimée was on the side of art against the utilitarians. Taste is formed by attending to the relationship between form and function. At the 1862 International Exhibition he set out recommendations aimed at ensuring that industry would not suck the life out of the arts.
