Abstract: This article studies writings on Mérimée by three English essayists from the late nineteenth century. Oscar Wilde interrogates the rapport between truth and fiction in literature and life in relation to Mérimée. Walter Pater examines his œuvre, emphasising its impersonality. Arthur Symons portrays Mérimée as a modern neurotic.
