Abstract: A projection of the unconscious, the apparition of a monstrous snake is a theme common to Mérimée’s Djoûmane and Catalina by Villiers de L’Isle-Adam. Through their construction, both tales turn it into the representation of a desire seen as fearful given its association with violence.
